The Journey - A life of art and discovery

Roman Reyes, a Mexican native from Gomez Palacio, Durango, has flourished in Arizona since moving here in 1961. A standout gymnast, musician and scholar at Phoenix Union High School, Roman also received a commercial art degree upon graduation in 1965 all while forming lasting bonds with friends and community as one of the most popular students in school.

Starting his teaching career as a visiting faculty member at Glendale Community College in 1976, Roman fell in love with the ability to help students realize their dreams through academic achievement. When minority students at Phoenix College clamored for a teacher who had cultural sensitivity and an understanding of ethnic art forms, Roman was the obvious choice for the position. Now after 31 years, he is the recently retired Department Chair for the Art, Photography, Music and Anthropology Departments, and managed the Fine Arts Gallery, while responsible for curriculum, exhibits, students, faculty and staff at the first of the Maricopa County Community Colleges. Thanks to Roman's love of art and education, the Phoenix College Art Program is recognized as one of the best.

In the years since his arrival at Phoenix College, Roman has participated in a cultural exchange program with WUYI University in China; an educational computer design presentation in Sao Paolo, Brazil; a cultural exchange and Study Abroad program with Charleville Castle in Ireland, and a new collaborative educational exchange with Universidad de Noroeste in Hermosillo, Mexico. The Arte Suavecito scholarship for a deserving student was established in 2006 in honor of Roman's retirement from Phoenix College.

A small business owner, Roman is an integral member of his community and has been involved in many civic and educational projects. The recent release of the Los Veteranos DVD, a World War II memories project of the Latino soldier included cover artwork provided by Roman Reyes to help support the aging veterans of American Legion Post 41.

Roman's ability to connect with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds has forged strong bonds that transcend the classroom.
